Rock Eagle Effigy Mound

Rock Eagle is a large effigy mound in Putnam County, Georgia. The bird effigy measures 102 feet head to tail and, 120 feet wingtip to wingtip. It is built of mounded quartzite boulders. It was constructed during the Woodland Period of precontact Southeastern archaeology, sometime between 1,000 and 3,000 years ago. A stone tower constructed in the 1930’s allows for elevated viewing of this huge structure.
